Wearin' O' the Red

It doesn’t happen often, but it would be fun to see when it does – the National League’s Reds against the American League’s Red Sox. Weren’t we Red Stockings once upon a time? Or was that their original name? I see I have some googling to do. Well, that search will be more fruitful than looking for tickets to the game itself. Only January and that St. Patrick’s Day duel is already sold out.

Okay, history, in shortened form!

In 1869, the Cincinnati Red Stockings were the first avowedly professional baseball team. They were a barnstorming team, who finished undefeated.

The success of the Red Stockings led to the formation of the National Association of Baseball Clubs, the first professional league.

Most of the members of the Cincinnati ball club went to Boston and formed the Boston Red Stockings.

The Boston club dominated the National Association, and was one of the the clubs that formed the national League in 1876.

This team became the Boston Braves, then Milwaukee Braves, then Atlanta Braves.

In that sense, the Atlanta Braves are the direct descendants of the original Cincinnati Red Stockings.

There is also a direct connection between Cincinnati baseball and Boston baseball.
